Heavy Rain Forecast for Southern States Over the Next Three Days

New Delhi: The Southwest Monsoon continues to contend with the El Niño weather cycle. Conditions are shaping up for heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds (storms) across several parts of India, driven by an increase in the intensity, dynamics, and density of monsoon winds, alongside the formation of a powerful weather system over the Western Pacific Ocean. However, the El Niño cycle is also steadily strengthening, which could lead to a largely subdued monsoon across the country's central, western, and southern states in the coming weeks.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that thunderstorms accompanied by strong winds of 50–60 kmph are likely over the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and the adjacent southeastern Bay of Bengal over the next seven days. This intense wind activity could combine with strong surface winds, potentially triggering regular rainfall along the country's western coast and interior peninsular regions.

A depression named 'Wujira' is forming near the Philippines over the South China Sea, while a Category-3 storm, 'Dolphin', is developing over the Western Pacific Ocean; these systems may interact with cyclonic winds over the Bay of Bengal. This interaction is expected to strengthen the monsoon. As a result of this robust monsoon flow, cyclonic circulations could develop over northeastern Bihar, central Assam, northeastern Bangladesh, and south-interior Karnataka. According to the Meteorological Department, torrential rain is likely in Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Puducherry over the next three days.
