Government wheat procurement has reached close to 199 lakh tonnes
★ Government procurement of wheat is currently ongoing in nearly all wheat-producing states of the country.
★ As of April 24, the procurement has reached nearly 199 lakh tonnes, compared to around 136 lakh tonnes during the same period last year.
★ Government procurement has increased by 40% compared to last year.
★ Private procurement is observed to be higher than last year in Punjab and Haryana this year.
★ In Punjab, government procurement has reached 68.4 lakh tonnes, compared to 45.8 lakh tonnes during the same period last year.
★ In Haryana, procurement is around 58.9 lakh tonnes, up from 52 lakh tonnes last year.
★ Government procurement is gradually increasing in both states.
★ A target of 312.7 lakh tonnes of wheat procurement has been set for the current year.
★ Madhya Pradesh has performed remarkably well, with procurement reaching 56.5 lakh tonnes, compared to 31.1 lakh tonnes last year—boosted by bonuses offered over the MSP (Minimum Support Price).
★ In contrast, in Rajasthan, where a bonus was also announced, procurement reached 8.8 lakh tonnes, up from 2.6 lakh tonnes last year.
Wheat Procurement in Previous Years (in lakh tonnes):
2021-22: 433.4
2022-23: 187.9
2023-24: 262
2024-25: 266.1 (as of now)
★ As IGRAIN India has stated in several reports, if government procurement exceeds 280 lakh tonnes, government intervention in markets may increase—and this seems to be happening.
★ At the current pace, total government wheat procurement could reach around 300 lakh tonnes this year, which will have a future impact on market trends.
★ Although it may be difficult for prices to reach last year’s high levels, current prices can be considered the bottom. Buying at these levels is advisable.
★ In the future, wheat prices in Delhi are expected to reach a maximum of Rs. 2800 per quintal.
