The global pea production is expected to increase by 1.8% in 2024, reaching 117.80 lakh tonnes, up from 117 lakh tonnes in 2023. Russia and Canada are the leading producers, with Canada notably increasing its production despite a small reduction in its domestic estimate for 2024.
In Canada, pea production has risen, with a 6% increase in the sowing area for the 2024-25 season compared to the previous one.
Despite a reduction in estimates by the Canadian government agency Stats Can (by 1.63 lakh tonnes), production remains 15% higher than in 2023, though it is about 4 lakh tonnes less than the record high of 34 lakh tonnes in 2022.
Yellow pea production in Canada has increased by 2.75 lakh tonnes, while green pea production has risen by 1.30 lakh tonnes.
Exports from Canada are performing well, partly due to favorable conditions for exporting to India, as the Indian government has extended the duty-free import deadline for peas until February 2025.
The increase in total pea availability in Canada, coupled with strong export opportunities, ensures a healthy market outlook for peas globally.
