Expected Acceleration in Rabi Crop Sowing in Northern India

New Delhi. Conditions for the sowing of Rabi crops are gradually becoming favorable in the northern part of the country. With rising temperatures—following recent rainfall—farmers in Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, and Haryana may find an opportune moment to accelerate the sowing of crops, particularly wheat and mustard. Meanwhile, the ongoing, robust harvesting of Kharif crops is steadily freeing up agricultural land. Stocks of fertilizers, including urea, have already been delivered to these states, with further supplies currently underway; however, the situation in Rajasthan remains less encouraging.

Rainfall continues across states such as Bihar, West Bengal, Odisha, Jharkhand, and Chhattisgarh, with rain also expected in Maharashtra and Gujarat. In the southern states, heavy rainfall is being recorded due to the activity of the Northeast Monsoon and a cyclonic storm named 'Arnab'. Overall, conditions across nearly all major agricultural-producing states in the country are becoming increasingly suitable for Rabi crop sowing. Madhya Pradesh is also expected to receive rainfall.

During the Rabi season, Rajasthan is a major producer of mustard, chickpea (gram), and barley, and it ranks among the top five states contributing wheat to the central pool. Madhya Pradesh is also a significant producer of wheat, chickpea, and mustard.
