Increase in Carryover Stocks of Soybean and Soymeal

Indore. It is estimated that the carryover stocks of soybean and soymeal at the beginning of the current marketing season are higher compared to the previous season. According to a report by the Soybean Processors Association of India (SOPA), a leading industry body, the soybean stock stood at 8.31 lakh tonnes as of October 1, 2026—an 8 percent increase over the stock held during the same period in 2025. Similarly, the carryover surplus stock of soymeal more than doubled, rising from 68,000 tonnes to 1.93 lakh tonnes during the period under review.

The SOPA report indicates that total exports of soybean meal (DOC) from the country during the 2024-25 marketing season (October–September) reached 20.23 lakh tonnes; however, this figure fell by approximately 50 percent to 10 lakh tonnes in the 2025-26 season. Extremely high soybean prices led to a sharp rise in the production cost of soymeal, rendering its export offer prices largely uncompetitive in the global market.

Meanwhile, in the domestic sector, the total consumption of soymeal—primarily for the animal feed and poultry feed industries—is estimated to have increased from 62 lakh tonnes in the 2024-25 season to 63 lakh tonnes in the 2025-26 season.

According to the SOPA report, domestic soybean production declined from 128.82 lakh tonnes in the 2024-25 season to 110.26 lakh tonnes in the 2025-26 season, with projections suggesting a further drop to approximately 107 lakh tonnes for the 2026-27 season. Soybean imports stood at only 2,000 tonnes in the 2024-25 season, but surged to a new record level of 1.1 million tonnes in the 2025-26 season.
