New Delhi. Emphasizing the need to make the country self-reliant in the food sector, the Union Agriculture Minister stated that, in this context, farmers should focus particular attention on increasing the production of pulses and oilseeds.

The government will ensure every possible assistance in this regard so that the nation does not have to rely on imports from abroad for any food product. Currently, dependence on the import of edible oils stands at 55 percent, while dependence on pulse imports has risen from 8 percent in 2022–23 to reach 21 percent in 2024–25.

The Agriculture Minister asserts that achieving self-reliance in the production of pulses and oilseeds is essential to ensure the country's food security. A substantial amount of money is spent on the import of edible oils and pulses, and consequently, Indian farmers are unable to secure attractive and remunerative prices for their produce.

Indian farmers are capable of boosting the production of pulses and oilseeds; they simply require appropriate incentives. The government is extending support and assistance to farmers through various measures and programs.
