Domestic Sugar Production Slightly Better Than Last Season

New Delhi. The apex body of private sugar mills—the Indian Sugar and Bio-Energy Manufacturers Association (ISMA)—has significantly slashed its sugar production estimate for the 2025-26 season, pegging it at 272.31 lakh tonnes; this figure falls short of even the domestic demand and consumption levels. Nevertheless, this production volume represents a slight increase compared to the 2024-25 season.
According to ISMA, during the current 2025-26 marketing season (October–September), sugar production in Uttar Pradesh is projected to decline to 87.50 lakh tonnes, while in Maharashtra, it is estimated to surge to 99.30 lakh tonnes, and in Karnataka, to rise to 47.90 lakh tonnes.
Furthermore, other states across the country—including Gujarat and Tamil Nadu—are collectively expected to produce 37.91 lakh tonnes of sugar. This includes states such as Bihar, Punjab, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Rajasthan.
Most sugar mills in the country have already concluded their operations for the season. The Director General of ISMA stated that domestic sugar consumption during the 2024-25 season stood at approximately 281 lakh tonnes, a figure that is projected to contract to 277 lakh tonnes in the current 2025-26 season.
