Due to strong demand from China and Bangladesh, export of red chilli reached new record level

Mumbai. Due to strong demand from China and Bangladesh and some other countries, the export of Indian red chilli jumped to a new record level of $ 1.509 billion during the financial year 2023-24 (April-March), which was about 15 percent more than the total export of $ 1.30 billion in the financial year 2022-23. In terms of Indian currency also,

the export income of red chilli during the period under review increased by 18 percent from Rs 10,564 crore to Rs 12,492 crore.

According to the data released by the Spices Board, the export of red chilli also increased by 15 percent in terms of quantity and its total shipment increased from 5.24 lakh tonnes in 2022-23 to above 6.01 lakh tonnes in 2023-24.

According to the data of the Board, during the entire period of FY 2023-24, spices worth $ 4..46 billion were exported from India, in which red chilli alone accounted for 34 percent or about $ 1.51 billion.

During the financial year 2023-24, China was the biggest buyer of Indian red chilli, which imported more than 1.79 lakh tonnes of red chilli worth more than Rs 4123 crore. During the financial year 2022-23,

it imported a little more than 1.57 lakh tonnes of Indian red chilli worth Rs 3408 crore. Thus, during 2023-24, as compared to 2022-23, there was a spectacular increase of 14 percent in terms of quantity and about 21 percent in terms of income in rupees in the export of red chilli to China.

It is worth noting that the export of Indian red chilli to China increased to a new record level of 1.91 lakh tonnes during the financial year 2021-22, which decreased to 1.57 lakh tonnes in 2022-23, but again increased to 1.79 lakh tonnes in 2023-24. It is noteworthy that mainly Teja variety of red chilli is imported in China for oleoresin extraction.
