Las Vegas. Due to a sharp decline in production due to adverse weather conditions, on one hand the import of dry food beans in Mexico is increasing rapidly from other countries including America and Canada,
while on the other hand the export of Kabuli chana from there is getting affected and its price has jumped to a very high level. It is known that high quality Kabuli chana is produced in Mexico.
In Mexico, located in the continent of North America, the average unit export offer price of 11 mm grain size Kabuli chana has been recorded at $ 1675 per tonne so far in the current marketing season of 2024-25, which is much higher than the average price of $ 1450 per tonne for the same period of 2023-24 season.
It is worth mentioning that between May and September in the year 2017, the average export price of Kabuli chana of this quality had reached a new record level of $ 2050 per tonne.
According to trade analysts, one of the main reasons for the high export offer price of 9 to 11 mm grain Kabuli gram in Mexico is that the export of Kabuli gram from India has decreased.
During the first half of the year 2024, 98,300 tonnes of Kabuli gram were exported from India, which was less than the shipment of 1.29 lakh tonnes in the same period of the year 2023 but more than the five-year average export of 76,700 tonnes.
It is believed that this time Indian exports have declined due to low domestic production in the Rabi season. According to government data, the total production of gram (including Kabuli) in India has come down from 122.7 lakh tonnes to 110.4 lakh tonnes.
Although the production data of Desi gram and Kabuli gram is not released separately in India, but the weak export performance shows that the production of Kabuli gram has also declined.
While there is a push to increase the production of chickpeas in India, there is no significant increase in the production of chickpeas for export purposes.
Russia is now fast emerging as a strong competitor in the global export market for small-grain chickpeas. The offer price of 7 mm Russian chickpeas for shipment to the Indian subcontinent has come down to extremely competitive levels, which is likely to limit the demand for Canadian chickpeas in this region.
For example, during the 11 months from January to November in 2023, Pakistan imported only 17,300 tonnes of chickpeas from Canada while importing a massive 1.37 lakh tonnes from Russia. There is also a huge import of Desi chickpeas from Australia.
