New Delhi. The latest data from the Indian Sugar and Bio-energy Manufacturers Association (ISMA) reveals that, during the current 2025-26 marketing season, total domestic sugar production has risen to 275.28 lakh tonnes.
This represents a 7 percent increase over the production figure of 256.49 lakh tonnes recorded during the corresponding period of the 2024-25 season. Currently, five sugar mills remain active in the country, whereas at this same time last year, 19 sugar mills were engaged in sugarcane crushing operations.
However, during the period under review, sugar production in Uttar Pradesh declined from 92.40 lakh tonnes to 89.65 lakh tonnes, and all sugar units in the state have now ceased operations. While 10 mills were crushing sugarcane in the state last year, Maharashtra and Karnataka, on the other hand, have witnessed a significant increase in sugar production.
Sugar production in Maharashtra surged from 80.93 lakh tonnes to 99.20 lakh tonnes, while in Karnataka, it rose from 40.40 lakh tonnes to 48.01 lakh tonnes. All sugar mills in both these states have also now shut down for the season. Nevertheless, a special sugar production session is scheduled to commence in Karnataka in June-July, during which sugarcane crushing may resume in a few mills.
Sugarcane crushing is also expected to take place in a few units in Tamil Nadu during this same period. Typically, this special session yields approximately 4–5 lakh tonnes of sugar production across Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. If this additional output is included, the total sugar production for the entire 2025-26 marketing season could reach close to 280 lakh tonnes.
Currently, only five sugar mills—all located in Tamil Nadu—remain active. During the ongoing season, sugar production has reached 7.20 lakh tonnes in Gujarat, 5.38 lakh tonnes in Tamil Nadu, and 25.84 lakh tonnes across other states of the country.
