Domestic Maize Production Expected to Reach New Record Levels

New Delhi. Domestic maize production is expected to rise sharply and reach new record levels this year due to increased sown area and favorable weather conditions during the Kharif and Rabi seasons.
According to the second advance estimate released by the Union Agriculture Ministry, maize production is expected to reach an all-time high of 461.49 lakh tonnes in the Kharif and Rabi seasons of 2025-26, which is 27.40 lakh tonnes more than the production of 434.09 lakh tonnes for the entire marketing season of 2024-25.
Under this, Kharif season production is expected to jump from 248.08 lakh tonnes to 302.47 lakh tonnes and Rabi season production is expected to increase from 147.53 lakh tonnes to 159.03 lakh tonnes.
It is noteworthy that the total production of 38.47 lakh tonnes of maize for 2024-25 also includes the production of which has not been included in the summer production because its sowing is currently underway.
If the figure for the summer crop is assumed to be 40 lakh tonnes, then the gross annual production of maize in the country can increase to more than 500 lakh tonnes for the first time.
The minimum support price of maize has been increased from Rs. 2225 per quintal last year to Rs. 2400 per quintal in the 2025-26 season, but the wholesale market price is running below this.
Due to record production, various consuming industries will continue to receive regular stocks of maize in sufficient quantities this time.
