New Delhi. The India office (USDA Post) of the Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS) under the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has projected a 3 percent increase in groundnut production in India during the 2026-27 season compared to 2025-26.
According to the USDA Post report, the total area under groundnut cultivation in India during this period is expected to expand by 2 percent—from 5.62 million hectares—to reach approximately 5.7 million hectares; this figure encompasses the acreage across all three seasons: Kharif, Rabi, and Zaid.
Furthermore, increased usage of high-quality seeds with superior productivity potential could lead to some improvement in the average yield rate of groundnuts. The USDA Post has estimated that the gross production of groundnuts in Gujarat will rise by 3 percent, reaching 7.75 million tonnes.
Farmers in the state may demonstrate greater interest in cultivating groundnuts rather than cotton. Gujarat is the leading producing state for both of these commodities.
During the 2025-26 season, farmers have been earning higher incomes from the sale of groundnuts compared to cotton, driven by the commodity's elevated market prices.
