Decline in export of gram from Australia and peas-lentils from Canada

Winnipeg. Data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) shows that the pace of export of gram from the country was very slow during April as compared to March. In March 2024, there was a great export of 50,932 tonnes of gram from Australia, which fell by about 53 percent in April and got stuck at 24,136 tonnes. It is worth noting that till then the decision to make the import of Desi gram duty free in India had not been taken.

According to the available data, in April, the maximum shipment of 9176 tonnes of gram was made from Australia to Bangladesh, 6670 tonnes to the United Arab Emirates and 4114 tonnes to Nepal, while the remaining exports were made to other countries. Lentil exports from Australia also fell by 34 percent from 1,77,662 tonnes in March to 1,16,768 tonnes in April.

During the same period, a significant decline was also recorded in the bulk export of peas and lentils from Canada. According to the report of the Canadian Grain Commission (CGC), in April 2024, 43 thousand tonnes of lentils were loaded in ships for export at license-free facilities, which was much less than the loading of 53,500 tonnes in March but 2 thousand tonnes more than the export of 41 thousand tonnes in April 2023.

Including this, the total bulk export of lentils from Canada during the first 9 months of the current marketing season i.e. from August 2023 to April 2024 reached 6,40,100 tonnes, which was much less than the export of 10,87,700 tonnes in the same months of the 2022-23 season. Lentil is also exported from Canada through other means.

According to the CGC, bulk export of peas also decreased during this period. In April 2024, its export could reach only 23,800 tonnes, which was 69 percent less than the shipment of 76,800 tonnes in March and 83 percent less than the shipment of 1,43,900 tonnes in April 2023.

In the 9 months from August 2023 to April 2024, a total of 17,66,600 tonnes of pea bulk exports were made, which was about 2 lakh tonnes more than the total shipment of 15,73,200 tonnes during August 2022 to April 2023.
