Cotton area in Punjab is less than one lakh hectares

Bhatinda. It seems that the enthusiasm and attraction of the farmers of Punjab towards cotton cultivation is continuously decreasing rapidly. Last year, the target of cotton cultivation was set at 3 lakh hectares, while the actual area could reach only 1.79 lakh hectares.
In view of this, the Agriculture Department reduced the sowing target for the current year by half to 2 lakh hectares.
When the sowing season ended there on 31 May 2024, the total area of cotton could reach only 96,614 hectares. In this way, there was a tremendous decline of 46 percent in the production area of cotton during 2024 as compared to the year 2023.
During the current year, the area of cotton sowing in Punjab has come down to a record low. Its existence may end there for the last few years.
Due to various reasons, farmers are no longer ready to cultivate cotton. The Agriculture Department is very worried about this but it cannot put any pressure on the farmers.
The target for cotton cultivation was reduced considerably but the actual area still remained far behind.
About 99 percent of cotton is produced in four districts of Punjab- Fazilka, Mansa, Bhatinda and Muktsar while some of it is cultivated in four other districts- Sangrur, Moga, Barnala and Faridkot. Cotton is cultivated in Punjab during April-May.
