Corn Use in Ethanol Increases, Rice Declines; Sugar Remains Stable
★ In domestic markets, corn prices are currently around ₹1,700–₹1,900 per quintal, while **rice supplied by the Food Corporation of India is available at about ₹2,320 per quintal on a pan-India basis. Due to this large price difference, the use of corn in ethanol production is increasing, while the use of rice has declined. However, this shift has not significantly impacted corn prices yet, mainly because India currently has record corn stocks.
★ According to government estimates, total corn production from kharif, rabi, and the upcoming summer crop could reach around 49 million tons.
★ Because of the ongoing global conflicts and rising energy demand, ethanol production in the country is expected to increase, as already observed in February 2026.
★ If the use of corn in ethanol production continues to rise, it may support and improve corn prices in the future.
