★ As seen in the data above, chana prices have dropped significantly compared to last year, but have shown a slight increase over the past month.
★ The recent price rise is due to multiple factors such as:
• Weaker stock availability in Australia, leading to lower imports
• Emerging demand for besan (gram flour) in the domestic market
• Reduced government procurement
• Indications of lower-than-estimated domestic production
★ In Mumbai, Australian chana was priced at Rs. 6,900/quintal on 02.07.2024. It fell to Rs. 5,650/quintal by June 2025, but rebounded to Rs. 5,850/quintal by 02.07.2025.
★ A similar trend has been observed in other markets and import prices.
★ Sowing of chana has begun in Australia, and another record crop is possible this year, but the new harvest will arrive only by October–November, coinciding with India's festive season.
★ With rising demand for besan and chana dal during the festive period, chana prices are likely to receive support in the coming months.
