Ceasefire in Iran–US conflict may support Indian agri exports
★ A potential ceasefire between Iran and the United States could provide support to India’s agricultural exports. Demand is likely to improve for key commodities such as basmati rice, tea, kabuli chana, spices, dry fruits, sugar, and oilmeal.
★ With easing tensions in the West Asia region, shipping activities are expected to gradually normalize, offering relief to Indian exporters. However, several vessels are currently stuck in key maritime routes, particularly in the strait region, and clearance of this congestion will be necessary before trade fully resumes.
★ If the ceasefire holds and the conflict comes to a complete end, global prices of these commodities may also find support, strengthening India’s export competitiveness.
★ At the same time, the damage to Iran’s infrastructure due to the conflict could impact its economic activity. This may lead to constraints in payment capacity and demand in the near term.
★ Overall, while the ceasefire improves medium-term export prospects, the full benefit will depend on normalization of ground conditions and resolution of logistical bottlenecks.
