Canada is on track to export 21 lakh tonnes of lentils in the 2024-25 marketing season (August 2024–July 2025), a notable increase compared to the previous season.
By November 2024, Canada had already exported approximately 8 lakh tonnes, marking a 14% increase over the same period in 2023. India remains the largest importer, bringing in 3.50 lakh tonnes, followed by Turkey and the UAE.
Despite a lower previous year's stock, the total availability of lentils in Canada has risen by 6 lakh tonnes due to a better production season.
However, the average price of lentils is expected to drop by 17% from the previous season, with prices projected to average $835 per tonne.
Specifically, the price of number one grade thick green lentils is expected to be $540 per tonne higher than that of red lentils, compared to $787 per tonne more in the 2023-24 season.
Looking ahead to the 2025-26 season, Canada's lentil sowing area is expected to increase to 17.30 lakh hectares, but production may slightly decline to around 24 lakh tonnes.
With high outstanding stock, total lentil availability in Canada is forecast to reach 28 lakh tonnes.
