Canada has seen a significant increase in pea exports during the first four months of the 2024-25 marketing season, shipping about 1.3 million tonnes, a 30% increase compared to the same period in 2023.
India is the largest buyer, importing over half of Canada's exports (around 700,000 tonnes), followed by China with 300,000 tonnes. The total export forecast for the season is 2.4 million tonnes.
While Canada's pea production has improved slightly, it still faces strong competition from Russia in the global market, which could put pressure on prices.
Prices are expected to remain relatively stable, with yellow peas priced under $425 per tonne and green peas priced higher at $195 per tonne, compared to $185 per tonne the previous year.
In the US, pea production is expected to increase by 7%, which may reduce Canada's pea exports to the US to around 140,000 tonnes. Looking ahead to the 2025-26 season, Canada's pea planting area is expected to grow to 1.33 million hectares,
with production potentially rising by 2% to 3.1 million tonnes. However, there has been no change in export forecasts, and surplus stocks may increase, potentially keeping price pressures in place.
