Brisbane. Austrian lentil exports have slowed down due to weak demand from top importing countries like India, Bangladesh and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) shows that Australia exported 1,77,662 tonnes of lentils in March 2024, which fell 34 percent to 1,16,768 tonnes in April. In this way, a massive drop of about 61 thousand tonnes was recorded in lentil exports.
In April 2024, Bangladesh overtook India to become the largest importer of Australian lentils, importing 40,053 tonnes. India stood second with 25,897 tonnes of lentils.
After this, the United Arab Emirates stood third with 17,719 tonnes. According to the ABS report, during the current marketing season till April 2024, a total of 8,47,272 tonnes of lentils were exported from Australia, which was slightly more than the shipment of 8,21,608 tonnes during the same period of the previous marketing season.
According to the government organization- ABARES, during the marketing season of 2023-24, about 16 lakh tonnes of lentils were produced in Australia and the production of the current season of 2024-25 is also expected to be around this.
Although there is a possibility of some increase in the sowing area this time, but due to the weather not being completely favorable, its sowing is likely to happen even after the scheduled period, due to which the average yield rate of the crop may decrease in some producing areas.
