The formation of the National Turmeric Board in Nizamabad, Telangana, marks a significant step in boosting India's turmeric industry, which is already a global leader in production and export.
The board aims to assist in the development of turmeric production, quality control, and value-added products, which could contribute to an increase in turmeric exports, projected to surpass $1 billion by 2030.
India currently accounts for more than 75% of global turmeric production, and with over 30 varieties cultivated across the country, the industry is poised for growth.
Although the country exports only a small portion of its turmeric—10-15%—the export figures have been steadily increasing, with a rise from 1.53 lakh tonnes in 2021-22 to 1.70 lakh tonnes in 2022-23, generating substantial revenue.
The newly established Turmeric Board will focus on promoting research, developing new turmeric-based products, and improving export opportunities, especially in international markets like the UAE, USA, Bangladesh, and West Asia.
The government's efforts, combined with this dedicated board, are expected to drive further growth in both production and export, cementing India's position as a global leader in turmeric.
