The Union Agriculture Ministry has initiated a national survey to assess the consumption patterns of edible oils in India.

This is the first such survey at the national level and is being conducted to gather accurate data to guide the implementation of the Mission on Edible Oil-Oilseeds program. The survey, which began on January 9, will run for 45 days and conclude on February 23.

India, being the world's largest importer and consumer of edible oils, lacks precise data on its consumption patterns, relying instead on estimates.

The survey will provide accurate information on edible oil consumption, including preferences for specific types of oils, which will aid the government in making informed policy decisions.

Industry reports indicate that the average annual per capita consumption of edible oil in India has risen to over 20 kg, which exceeds the recommended consumption levels set by the Indian Council of Medical Research (12 kg) and the World Health Organization (13 kg).

This increase is attributed to factors such as population growth, higher incomes, urbanization, and changes in dietary habits.

The survey will focus on understanding consumer preferences, identifying which oils are more popular in different regions, and determining the reasons behind these preferences. This data is expected to help shape future agricultural and health policies related to edible oils.
