The recent shipment of rice from India to Bangladesh marks a significant step in fulfilling Bangladesh's rice import needs. On December 25, the MV TANAIS DREAM, a ship loaded with 24,690 tonnes of sella rice, reached Chittagong port in Bangladesh.

This consignment is part of a larger 50,000-tonne rice import order that the Bangladesh government agency had placed through an international tender, which was awarded to an Indian supplier.

The rice is being unloaded at Chittagong port, in line with the terms of the tender. Bangladesh had specified in the contract that the rice must be delivered to two of its key ports: Chittagong and Mongla.

This first shipment is a significant portion of the total order, with the remaining rice expected to depart from India in early January 2024.

Additionally, a new tender for the import of rice has also been issued, suggesting that Bangladesh continues to rely on rice imports to meet domestic demand.

The import from India is a continuation of the strong trade links between the two countries, especially in agricultural goods.
