New Delhi: Officials of the central agency, the Food Corporation of India (FCI), have indicated that the e-auction process for wheat sales under the Open Market Sale Scheme (OMSS) may resume next week, after being temporarily suspended in December.
A substantial stock of wheat is available in the central pool, while a strong influx of the new crop began in March-April.
According to official sources, the OMSS for wheat sales is planned to be reactivated next Wednesday (January 14). Wheat prices in Delhi had risen to Rs 2930/2950 per quintal last week.
Arrivals of wheat in wholesale markets of major producing states are declining due to the off-season for supply. Although the quantity of wheat to be offered under the weekly e-auction has not yet been finalized, it is understood that it could be more than 2-3 lakh tonnes. Previously, a quantity of 2 lakh tonnes was fixed.
According to official sources, the auction process may be conducted on a weekly basis. The Food Corporation had started the auction process for wheat sales on November 12, 2025, and continued it for two weeks.
However, due to significantly lower sales compared to the offered quantity, the auction was changed from weekly to fortnightly. When sales did not improve even then, the auction was suspended.
The chairman of a leading organization, the Wheat Products Promotion Society, says that the tender has been confirmed and the maximum quantity of wheat that each bidder can purchase may be increased from 250 tonnes to 400 tonnes. Some increase in wheat sales is expected under the upcoming auction.
