The Rabi crop sowing in Gujarat has seen significant changes this year compared to the previous one. Overall, the total area dedicated to Rabi crops has increased by 2.35 lakh hectares, rising from 45.20 lakh hectares in 2024 to 47.55 lakh hectares in 2025. While some crops have seen a boost, others have experienced a decline in their sowing areas.

  1. Increased Sowing Areas:

    • Wheat: The area dedicated to wheat has risen from 12.20 lakh hectares last year to 13.42 lakh hectares this year.
    • Maize: The sowing area for maize has increased from 1.11 lakh hectares to 1.33 lakh hectares.
    • Gram: The sowing of gram has grown substantially, from 6.29 lakh hectares last year to 8.40 lakh hectares this year.
    • Total Cereal Crops: The total area of cereal crops has expanded from 13.69 lakh hectares to 15.04 lakh hectares.
    • Total Pulses: The total area of pulses has increased significantly from 6.75 lakh hectares to 9.11 lakh hectares.
    • Coriander: The sowing area of coriander has seen growth, moving ahead of last year's figures, although it was lagging earlier.
  2. Decreased Sowing Areas:

    • Mustard: The area for mustard has decreased from 2.77 lakh hectares to 2.58 lakh hectares, causing a reduction in the total oilseeds area from 2.77 lakh hectares to around 2.60 lakh hectares.
    • Cumin: The area for cumin has dropped from 5.61 lakh hectares to 4.74 lakh hectares.
    • Fennel: A significant decline has been noted in the sowing area for fennel, which has fallen from 1.33 lakh hectares to just 56 thousand hectares.

These trends indicate a shift in crop preferences and agricultural practices in Gujarat, with an increase in the cultivation of grains and pulses, while certain oilseeds and spices like mustard, cumin, and fennel have seen a decline.
