Urad prices fall, impacted by rising supply and sluggish demand

Chennai. Urad prices declined during the current week due to increased selling pressure and continued lack of demand. New urad arrivals have begun in Chandausi and Saharanpur districts of Uttar Pradesh. Increased availability of urad at ports and producer markets, combined with sluggish demand, has put pressure on urad prices. Increased supply and slow demand are expected to further reduce urad prices in the near future.
India has traditionally imported urad from Myanmar, but imports from Brazil increased sharply to 1.98 lakh tonnes between January and October 2025, representing a two-and-a-half-fold increase from 76,000 tonnes in the same period last year. According to data, urad imports from Brazil pick up pace from July, with the highest shipments occurring in September and October. This year, 40,494 tonnes of urad was imported in July, 30,325 tonnes in August, 39,960 tonnes in September and 53,779 tonnes in October. Experts say that due to India's large market and damage to Kharif crops, imports of urad from Brazil are likely to continue on a large scale.

Due to increased selling pressure from importers and sluggish demand, Chennai urad prices declined by Rs 50/75 per quintal this week, bringing the FAQ price to Rs 6725 and SQ urad to Rs 7375 per quintal.
