Sluggish Trade in Turmeric: No Immediate Price Rally Expected

New Delhi: During the current week, the turmeric market witnessed no significant trading activity. This is because, apart from exporters, local trade also remained limited. Currently, the arrival of new produce at markets in key production centers is proceeding at a healthy pace. Although reports suggest that turmeric production in the country is higher this season, the overall availability is expected to decline due to lower carry-over stocks from the previous season. Furthermore, owing to the prevailing instability in Middle Eastern countries, there appear to be no immediate prospects for an increase in export demand. Consequently, market prices are expected to remain subdued for the time being.
Tamil Nadu
In Erode, a major market, the arrival of new turmeric is currently averaging 6,000 to 7,000 bags. Prices for 'Finger' turmeric are being quoted between ₹120 and ₹150 per kg, depending on quality, while 'Bulb' turmeric is being quoted between ₹110 and ₹134 per kg; however, trading activity remains low at these current price levels.
Telangana
In the Nizamabad market, the arrival of new turmeric is in full swing, with weekly arrivals reaching 100,000 to 120,000 bags. Prices for 'Bulb' turmeric are being quoted firmly between ₹110 and ₹122 per kg, while 'Finger' turmeric is trading between ₹120 and ₹145 per kg. Meanwhile, in the Warangal market, the arrival of new produce has just commenced, with current arrivals standing at 100 to 150 bags. Single-polished 'Bulb' turmeric is trading at ₹115 per kg, while double-polished 'Bulb' turmeric is trading at ₹122 per kg.
Andhra Pradesh
Reports indicate that the arrival of new turmeric produce is expected to begin by the end of the current week in Duggirala, a major market in Andhra Pradesh. Currently, the market is receiving arrivals of old-season stocks, averaging 400 to 500 bags, with prices being quoted between ₹110 and ₹120 per kg, depending on quality.
Maharashtra
In Sangli—a major market within the key producing state of Maharashtra—turmeric arrivals are proceeding well, while arrivals in the Marathwada region are showing a gradual upward trend. Sources indicate that the pressure from the arrival of new turmeric crops on the Marathwada line is expected to intensify during the month of April. Currently, the inflow of new turmeric at the Sangli market stands at 18,000 to 20,000 bags; prices for the 'Gattha' variety are being quoted between ₹145 and ₹170 per kilogram—depending on quality—while the 'Rajapuri' variety is fetching prices between ₹175 and ₹230 per kilogram. In the Hingoli market, the arrival of new stock has increased to between 4,000 and 4,500 bags, whereas arrivals in Nanded and Basmat are currently hovering between 1,000–1,200 bags and 800–1,000 bags, respectively. Across the markets of the Marathwada region, prices for the 'Gattha' variety are being quoted at ₹125–₹135, while the 'Finger' variety is trading at ₹130–₹145.
Market Trends (Bearish/Bullish)
Market experts suggest that, for the immediate future, there is little likelihood of a significant surge in turmeric prices. However, a price rally could materialize if export demand increases. Traders believe that demand for turmeric exports will rise once stability and peace are restored in the Middle East region. Should that scenario unfold, there is a strong possibility of a substantial upward movement in prices. Currently, in the Delhi market, the price for the 'Gattha' variety of turmeric is being quoted at ₹140–₹143 per kilogram—a figure that stood at ₹160–₹162 per kilogram during the month of January.
Exports
During the first nine months of the current season, turmeric exports recorded a growth of 4 percent, while export earnings saw an increase of 1 percent. According to available data, turmeric exports between April and December 2025 totaled 142,386 tonnes, generating revenue of ₹2,251.64 crore. In comparison, during the corresponding period of the previous year, exports stood at 136,921 tonnes, yielding revenue of ₹2,234.58 crore.
