Tur Dal Plays a Key Role in Rising Food Inflation: Economic Survey 2024-25
★ Along with tomato and onion, tur dal has played a significant role in driving India’s food inflation, which has remained high over the past two years.
★ The survey highlighted that a decline in tur dal production in 2022-23 and 2023-24 led to price pressures in FY24 and FY25 (April-December), despite various government measures to ensure supply in consumer regions. Production fell by 13.6% in 2022-23 and 10.8% in 2023-24, lower than the five-year average, impacting overall supply.
★ Food inflation, measured by the Consumer Food Price Index (CFPI), remained under pressure in FY25 (April-December) primarily due to vegetables and pulses. Although vegetables and pulses have a total weightage of 8.42% in the CPI basket, their contribution to inflation stood at 32.3% in FY25 (April-December).
★ However, due to a good Rabi harvest, India's inflation is expected to decline in the fourth quarter of the current financial year, aligning with the RBI and IMF’s target of 4% by FY26.
