The extension of the pea import deadline has a deep impact on the entire pulse industry
The extension of the pea (matar) import deadline has had a significant impact on the entire pulse industry. Over 2.3 million tons of peas were imported between December 2023 and November 2024. An additional 3-5 lakh tons are expected to be imported from December to February. Of the imported quantity, around 8.5-9 lakh tons are still lying at ports, causing billions of rupees in losses for importers.
The decision to open imports has benefited farmers in countries like Canada, Russia, Turkey, and others, while Indian farmers have faced significant losses. Similarly, dal traders, businesses, millers, and wholesalers are also struggling. According to government data, pea sowing this season is slightly behind last year, though industry insiders believe the actual figures may differ. The stock at the ports is equivalent to eight months' worth of consumption.
This decision has had a profound effect on the industry’s revenue, and recovery will take considerable time. I Grains India believes that after February, import duties may be reintroduced on peas. Despite these challenges, the government’s policies have allowed consumers to buy pulses at lower prices.
