Thailand's Rice Export and Sri Lanka's Rice Policy
The Thai Ministry of Agriculture is exploring measures to boost rice exports to around 7.5 million tons by 2025. These include reducing mandatory domestic reserves for exporters and lowering export permit fees. In the first 11 months of 2024, Thailand exported 9.19 million tons of rice, with major markets being South Africa, Europe, the USA, Canada, and the Philippines.
Meanwhile, Sri Lanka's Consumer Affairs Authority will decide whether to remove the Maximum Retail Price (MRP) for rice based on price stabilization following imports. The Sri Lankan government has permitted the import of 90,000 tons of rice, including white and Nadu varieties, until January 10.
