Spice Crops Sowing in Gujarat
Cumin (Jeera)
The average annual sowing area for cumin in Gujarat is 3.81 lakh hectares. Last season, it was sown in 5.6 lakh hectares, while as of January 6, 2025, the sowing has reached 4.73 lakh hectares—lower than last year but still above the 3-year average.
Last year, cumin had a record production, and there is a good stock available. The current season's sowing area is 90,000 hectares less than last year but still at the highest level in the past three years.
Coriander (Dhaniya)
The average sowing area for coriander in Gujarat over the past three years is 1.58 lakh hectares. Last season, it was sown in 1.26 lakh hectares, and it has now increased slightly to 1.29 lakh hectares. This sowing is still below the 3-year average but slightly higher than last year.
Sowing data from Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh are still awaited.
Fennel (Saunf)
There has been a significant decline in fennel sowing. Last season, fennel sowing reached a record 1.32 lakh hectares, but this season, it has dropped to just 0.56 lakh hectares, less than half the previous season's area. This is also below the 3-year average of 0.73 lakh hectares.
While there was good fennel production in Gujarat last year, a significant decline in production is expected this season.
There may be a rise in fennel prices in the future due to this drop in sowing and production.
