Sowing of Rabi crops is almost complete in India
In India, the sowing of rabi crops is nearly complete. For the rabi season of 2025, the total area under crops reached 622.76 lakh hectares, slightly higher than last year's 621.52 lakh hectares. Wheat sowing is almost complete, with an area of 319.74 lakh hectares, 5.49 lakh hectares more than last year. The Indian Meteorological Department predicts below-normal rainfall from January to March, though January may see above-average rain.
The wheat production target for this year is set at 1150 lakh tons, surpassing last year's 1132.9 lakh tons. The areas under other crops are as follows (in lakh hectares):
Chickpea: 94.45 (last year 93.17)
Lentil: 17.43 (last year 17.76)
Total coarse and nutrient-rich grains: 52.17 (last year 52.83)
Sorghum: 22.7 (last year 24.72)
Barley: 6.62 (last year 7.01)
Maize: 22.07 (last year 20.36)
Total oilseeds area: 96.74 (last year 101.64)
Mustard: 88.5 (last year 93.73)
Groundnut: 3.65 (last year 3.53)
Farmers have prioritized wheat, maize, and chickpea cultivation. The prices of these crops are above the MSP, suggesting that farmers are focused on crops with higher market prices. Indian farmers are increasingly adopting non-traditional crops alongside conventional ones.
