Slow progress in formal regulation of sugar industry

New Delhi. The central government is attempting to bring India's traditional sugar industry under formal regulation, but initial progress is proving to be quite slow. According to senior official sources, there are 66 large sugar production units operating in the country,
but only 11 of them have registered on the National Single Window System (NSWS) portal. Experts believe that the pace of registration may increase when the sugarcane crushing season begins in full swing next month.
Sugar mills have already been registered under this system, and now the sugar industry has been asked to register on the portal so that it can also be regulated if necessary.
It is noteworthy that the use of sugarcane in sugar and sugar production units begins before that of sugar mills and continues for several months.
States like Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Andhra Pradesh produce jaggery and khandsari on a large scale. The government expects to complete the registration of almost all khandsari units on the NSWS portal by the end of next month (November).
India is a leading producer of jaggery and khandsari. Its domestic consumption is also large here. In addition to direct human consumption, it is also used for industrial purposes. It is considered a good alternative to sugar.
