The latest data reveals mixed trends in the sowing of Rabi crops this season. While there has been a slight increase in the area under paddy and pulses, the area dedicated to coarse cereals and oilseeds has shown a decline.
Paddy and Pulses: The area under paddy cultivation has increased from 16.77 lakh hectares last year to 16.93 lakh hectares this season. Similarly, the area for pulse crops has risen from 136.02 lakh hectares to 137.17 lakh hectares. Within pulses, the sowing of gram has increased from 93.17 lakh hectares to 94.45 lakh hectares, but lentil sowing has declined from 17.76 lakh hectares to 17.43 lakh hectares. The sowing of peas and other pulses has not seen significant improvement.
Coarse Cereals and Oilseeds: On the other hand, the area under coarse cereals has reduced from 52.83 lakh hectares last season to 52.17 lakh hectares this time. Oilseeds, particularly mustard, have also seen a decrease. The total area for oilseeds has dropped from 101.64 lakh hectares to 96.74 lakh hectares. The area for mustard cultivation has specifically decreased from 93.73 lakh hectares to 88.50 lakh hectares. This drop is likely due to farmers shifting from mustard cultivation to wheat, as wheat prices have been more attractive this season.
Overall Rabi Crop Area: Despite these declines in certain crops, the total area under Rabi crops has increased by 1.24 lakh hectares, reaching 622.76 lakh hectares, compared to 621.52 lakh hectares last year. While wheat production is expected to rise slightly, mustard production is likely to fall, and gram production is anticipated to remain stable.
In conclusion, the trends suggest a shift in farmer preferences, with more focus on paddy, pulses, and wheat, while coarse cereals and oilseeds are seeing reduced attention this season.
