Signs of Rising Dry Fruit Prices Amidst West Asia Crisis

Mumbai: The ongoing crisis in West Asia is disrupting the supply chain for dry fruits in India, leading to a 10–20 percent increase in the prices of Iranian pistachios and dates over the past two months.
According to a leading industry body—the Nuts and Dry Fruits Council of India—Iran is a primary supplier of dates and pistachios to India; however, exports from the region are currently facing significant difficulties. Consequently, the availability of these dry fruits has declined by approximately 30 percent.
Nevertheless, the impact on India remains limited so far, as the market is currently outside its peak consumption season. Typically, demand begins to rise between June and July—ahead of Diwali—and until then, the market is expected to maintain a relatively stable environment.
The market for pistachios in India is valued at approximately ₹5,000 crore, while that for dates stands at around ₹3,000 crore. Iranian pistachios and dates enjoy immense popularity among consumers in India. However, sales are currently being adversely affected due to the elevated prices. Although imports via air freight remain an option, doing so would result in a further escalation of costs.
