New Delhi. A sharp increase in the prices of several essential daily food items has raised concerns among both ordinary consumers and the government.
Driven by price hikes in rice, sugar, mustard oil, and spices, the food inflation rate climbed to 7.74 percent in September. The government expects that once the festive season concludes, the surge in the prices of these food items will subside, leading to market stability.
Interestingly, the anticipated rise in the prices of pulses did not materialize in October, and the market for these commodities has remained largely stable.
The government is also releasing stocks of rice and pulses into the market and has begun making wheat available to flour millers and processors under the Open Market Sale Scheme (OMSS). The peak festive season will continue until mid-November, after which the wedding and auspicious event season will commence.
