Rice Procurement Crosses 571 Lakh Tonnes, 1% Higher Than Last Year
★ As of June 2025, India’s total rice procurement has increased. Last year’s procurement stood at 525.48 lakh tonnes.
★ The previous season's procurement concluded on June 30, and the new crop season begins from July 1.
★ Currently, the government holds 321 lakh tonnes of rice in stock, while the buffer norm for July 1 is 135 lakh tonnes. A similar quantity of paddy is available in the pool, leading to a storage crunch due to the massive stockpile.
★ To dispose of the surplus, rice is being distributed through OMSS (Open Market Sale Scheme), PMGKAY, other welfare schemes, and for ethanol production — but overall offtake remains sluggish.
★ According to sources, about 17 lakh tonnes of rice have been sold so far to ethanol manufacturers at a subsidized rate of ₹22.5/kg.
