New Delhi: The Union Minister of State for Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare has stated that domestic production of rice and wheat has witnessed a significant increase over the past five years.
The primary reasons for this growth are the farmers' increased adoption of better technology and improved seed varieties, along with largely favorable weather conditions.
Data from the Union Ministry of Agriculture indicates that during the current marketing season of 2025-26, the country's production of rice, wheat, and maize is projected to rise to new record levels. Wheat production, in particular, is estimated to cross the 120-million-tonne mark for the first time.
This will ensure a smooth and stable situation regarding the supply and availability of food grains within the domestic market. Government procurement of Kharif-season paddy is set to formally conclude on March 31, while the procurement season for Rabi-season paddy and wheat will commence on April 1.
Government procurement of wheat has already begun in several states. Despite numerous government initiatives aimed at crop diversification, farmers continue to stick to the cultivation of paddy and wheat.
