The production of Kabuli chana (chickpeas) in Canada has seen a significant increase, rising by 52% to reach 287,000 tonnes in 2024, despite a reduction in the government's estimate by 40,000 tonnes from the earlier forecast.
This growth compares favorably to the 2023 production levels. However, while Canada's Kabuli chana export in October 2024, at 12,500 tonnes, was in line with the five-year average, it fell short compared to last year's export figures.
In November 2024, exports improved to 20,444 tonnes. Despite this, overall exports between August and November 2024 were down, from 66,478 tonnes in 2023 to 53,183 tonnes.
Looking ahead, Canada will need to accelerate its export pace to meet its targets. Meanwhile, Mexico's chickpea sowing is slower than usual, which could reduce its crop area for 2025.
Additionally, Russia’s low stock of high-quality chickpeas may impact its export capacity. Despite these potential challenges, the demand for Desi chickpeas in India remains robust.
The price of chickpeas in Canada remains stable, with minimal fluctuations expected in the short term.
The upcoming annual crop production show in Saskatoon next week is anticipated to provide more clarity on the situation.
