The prices of red chilli have significantly dropped as the new crop begins to arrive in the markets of major producing states like Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Karnataka. Several factors are contributing to this price decline:
New Crop Arrival: The arrival of the new red chilli crop in key markets like Guntur, Warangal, Khammam, and Byadagi has put pressure on prices. This is a typical seasonal shift as fresh produce enters the market.
Large Outstanding Stock: There is a large outstanding stock of red chillies from previous years. For example, Andhra Pradesh's cold storage holds around 35-38 lakh bags of red chilli (each bag weighing 40 kg). Guntur alone has approximately 31 lakh bags in stock. Telangana and Karnataka also have substantial stockpiles, with Telangana having around 35 lakh tonnes and Karnataka holding a record 40 lakh bags.
Good Crop Condition Despite Reduced Sowing: While the sowing area for red chilli in Andhra Pradesh has reduced by 25-30%, the crop's condition is reported to be good. This suggests that the expected production will be relatively high despite the reduced area, maintaining a balanced supply and keeping prices under control.
Weak Demand: Currently, the demand for red chilli is reported to be weak, contributing to the price pressure. With a large supply and lower demand, the market atmosphere is one of price softening.
Price Comparison: The prices of various red chilli varieties have fallen compared to the previous year:
- Teja variety: Dropped from Rs. 18,000-21,000 per quintal last year to Rs. 13,000-15,000 per quintal this year.
- 341 variety: Dropped from Rs. 15,000-18,000 per quintal to Rs. 12,000-15,000 per quintal.
- DD variety: Dropped from Rs. 13,000-16,000 per quintal to Rs. 12,000-14,000 per quintal.
- S10, 334 and S 4 Sannam varieties: Dropped from Rs. 15,000-20,000 per quintal to Rs. 11,000-14,000 per quintal.
In conclusion, the combination of high stock levels, good crop conditions, lower demand, and the arrival of the new crop has led to a significant decrease in red chilli prices across major markets.
