In the 2024-25 marketing season, Canada's agricultural exports showed a mixed performance, with notable increases in pea exports but declines in the shipment of lentils and Kabuli gram (chickpeas).
Peas: There was a strong growth in pea exports, with Canada shipping 12,66,530 tonnes of peas from August to November 2024, up significantly from 9,81,806 tonnes in the same period of 2023. However, a decrease was observed in November, where only 2,00,836 tonnes were shipped compared to 4,37,635 tonnes in October 2024. Notable export destinations for Canadian peas included India, which imported 77,637 tonnes, followed by China and Bangladesh.
Lentils: Canada's lentil exports also showed an overall increase, with 8,30,378 tonnes exported in August-November 2024, compared to 7,31,582 tonnes during the same period in 2023. However, November shipments fell to 2,65,544 tonnes, down from 3,32,400 tonnes in October 2024. The main buyers of Canadian lentils in November included India, Turkey, and Pakistan, with respective imports of 1,37,277 tonnes, 24,840 tonnes, and 14,252 tonnes.
Kabuli Gram: While there was an increase in the monthly shipment of Kabuli gram from 12,516 tonnes in October 2024 to 20,443 tonnes in November 2024, total exports for the period of August-November 2024 decreased to 53,183 tonnes, down from 66,478 tonnes during the same period in 2023. Pakistan was the largest importer in November, receiving 5,289 tonnes, followed by Turkey and the United States.
Despite the mixed trends in exports, Canada saw a significant increase in the production of peas, lentils, and Kabuli gram in 2024, which was higher than the previous year.
