Delhi. While the harvesting season for new large (black) cardamom has begun, the festive season is also underway. The first harvest of the new crop is reported to be somewhat weak, while limited imports are also being made from Nepal.
Unfavorable weather conditions there are fears of some crop damage. Meanwhile, in India, new large cardamom stocks have either begun arriving or are expected to arrive soon in Sikkim, Meghalaya, Assam, and West Bengal.
The latest auction recorded an average price of ₹1250/₹1840 per kg, which was considered quite attractive to producers.
Given the high auction price, large cardamom prices are expected to remain strong in the spot market for some time. The second harvest of the new crop, the main season, will begin next month. During this time, not only is production high but quality is also quite good.
If the crop conditions remain good, the market could stabilize. Large cardamom exports are performing well. Fears of weak production in Nepal have led to rising prices, which could reduce importers' interest in importing it into India. Lower imports or higher prices could provide some support to the domestic market.
