News Capsule: Nepal: Large cardamom exports surge 62.5%, set for record on strong India demand
★ According to the Department of Customs, Nepal exported 4,605 tonnes of cardamom worth ₹9.49 billion by mid-March, marking a sharp increase from the same period last year. In the previous full fiscal year, exports stood at 4,301 tonnes valued at ₹7.68 billion.
★ The surge is mainly driven by strong demand from India, rising prices, and higher production. This season, cardamom prices ranged between NPR 2,000–2,600 per kg, up by NPR 150–200 compared to last year.
★ Production has increased by 20–25%, while the cultivation area has expanded to around 20,000 hectares. India remains the largest buyer, accounting for nearly 99% of Nepal’s exports, with further re-exports to Pakistan and Middle Eastern countries.
★ With the expansion of India’s spice processing industry, demand is expected to remain strong, potentially pushing Nepal’s cardamom exports to record levels.
