In 2024, Myanmar experienced a significant rise in its pulse exports, surpassing 18 lakh tonnes. The exports included 8.90 lakh tonnes of urad, 3.13 lakh tonnes of tur (tuvar), and 6.02 lakh tonnes of moong.
India remains the primary market for urad, which is in high demand there, and Myanmar continues to increase its production to meet this need.
Tuvar exports are also heavily reliant on India, which imports around 90% of Myanmar’s total exports of this pulse.
In terms of export timing, May saw the highest shipments, with 1.03 lakh tonnes of urad, 41 thousand tonnes of tuvar, and 95 thousand tonnes of moong sent out. Interestingly, while moong is banned in India, Myanmar still exports it to other countries.
As Myanmar’s pulse production grows, particularly with favorable weather conditions after sowing, there’s heightened attention on crop yields, which are reportedly normal.
With better domestic production of tuvar in India, the prices for this pulse have been under pressure, impacting the trade dynamics.
