Lucknow. The Central Government has approved the proposal to procure moong and groundnut from farmers in Uttar Pradesh at the Minimum Support Price (MSP). On June 11, a video conference was held between the Union Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Minister and the Uttar Pradesh Agriculture Minister, during which the state's request was presented and accepted.
The Uttar Pradesh Agriculture Minister informed that during the 2024–25 Zaid season, moong was cultivated over 1.60 lakh hectares and groundnut over 1.74 lakh hectares. Given this scale, the state government proposed procurement at MSP, which was promptly approved by the Union Agriculture Minister.
A target has been set to purchase 34,720 tonnes of moong and 50,750 tonnes of groundnut at MSP. The Union Minister also assured that this procurement target could be increased if needed. Additionally, the possibility of MSP procurement of urad will also be considered if the state submits a request.
The Uttar Pradesh Agriculture Minister further urged the Central Government to approve MSP procurement of maize, which has been cultivated over 4.80 lakh hectares this Zaid season. MSP procurement of maize, he stated, would provide significant relief to farmers across the state.
Moong and groundnut are primarily cultivated in the Bundelkhand region of Uttar Pradesh during the Zaid season, while maize is widely grown across many districts. Farmers have expressed optimism about the new crop cycle. For the 2024–25 season, the MSP has been set at Rs. 8,682 per quintal for moong, Rs.6,783 per quintal for groundnut, and ₹2,225 per quintal for maize. MSP for the 2025–26 season has also been announced.
