Monsoon Set to Arrive After a Brief Delay

Mumbai: The clouds of the Southwest Monsoon have not only reached Lakshadweep and its surrounding areas—situated just off the coast of Kerala—but are also steadily intensifying. Pre-monsoon thunderstorms and rainfall activity remain active across the central and eastern parts of the country.

The Meteorological Department has issued a warning for extremely heavy rainfall in Kerala and Mahe for the four-day period commencing June 3rd; this event will mark the formal arrival of the monsoon over the Indian mainland.

The monsoon trough (its northern limit) currently extends from just south of Kanyakumari, across northern Sri Lanka, and over the Bay of Bengal up to Myanmar. However, the monsoon is currently failing to find a firm foothold or favorable support to advance into India.

Winds flowing southward from the interior regions—driven by a Western Disturbance—are currently impeding the monsoon's further progression. It is anticipated that the influence of this system will dissipate within the next day or two, thereby clearing the path for the monsoon's arrival.

The Meteorological Department has confirmed that conditions have become favorable for the monsoon's arrival in Lakshadweep, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and certain adjacent regions of the Bay of Bengal over the next 2–3 days; thus, after a brief wait, the monsoon is poised to make its imminent arrival in India.
