Begusarai: Bihar, the leading producer of Rabi season maize, is expected to witness a 15% increase in maize production this year compared to last year, despite a slight delay in harvesting.

According to Rahul Chauhan, Director of I Grain India, harvesting is expected to pick up pace by the end of April, with sporadic arrivals already being reported in some APMC markets. The delay in sowing is the key reason for the late harvest.

Thanks to favorable weather, the yield and grain quality are expected to be excellent this season. Maize prices are currently around ₹2300 per quintal in Bihar’s Gulab Bagh Mandi, slightly above the MSP of ₹2225, making it a profitable crop for farmers.

As per the Union Agriculture Ministry's second advance estimatedomestic maize production in the Rabi season of 2024-25 is expected to reach 124.38 lakh tonnes, up 3.4% from last year.

Total maize production for 2024-25 (Kharif + Rabi) is projected to hit a record 372.50 lakh tonnes.
