Limited Decline in Fertilizer Sales in June Despite Significant Deficit in Monsoon Rainfall

New Delhi: Although a sharp 37 percent decline in southwest monsoon rainfall—compared to the long-term average—was recorded nationwide in June 2026, there was no significant drop in chemical fertilizer sales. Farmers maintained a strong interest in purchasing fertilizers such as Urea, DAP, and MOP. The acreage for Kharif crops in June also lagged 21 percent behind the previous year's figures.

According to agricultural experts, it appears farmers were confident that good rainfall would occur later, prompting them to continue purchasing fertilizers. This confidence is proving well-founded in July; the monsoon brought good rainfall during the first ten days, and after a week-long hiatus, it became active again.

Official data indicates that approximately 3.33 million tonnes of Urea were sold nationwide during June 2026, a decrease of 2.63 percent compared to June 2025. Similarly, DAP sales fell by 1.22 percent to 0.81 million tonnes. However, sales of Muriate of Potash (MOP) dropped by 19.05 percent, settling at around 0.17 million tonnes. The government asserts that there are adequate stocks of chemical fertilizers available in the country, with production and imports continuing alongside.
