Lentil: Prices below MSP in the markets
Lentil (masoor) prices in the markets are currently below MSP. The sowing of the new crop is slightly weaker than last year, which was expected. Throughout the season, prices have remained below MSP or weak due to continuous imports, ensuring availability.
According to government estimates, 1.6 million tons of lentils were produced in the previous season, and a record amount of lentils was imported in the last financial year, which kept the supply steady throughout the season. With availability remaining steady, imports have decreased compared to last year. The government has a satisfactory stock of both foreign and domestic lentils.
Even with the arrival of the new crop, it is expected that prices will remain below MSP, which could lead to an increase in government procurement. While government procurement may provide some support to prices, it is unlikely that prices will reach the levels seen two years ago.
The import of tuvar, lentils, and urad is expected to continue next year. Considering all these factors, it is advised not to take risks with speculative trading in lentils for now.
