Karnataka Tuvar strong crop
Karnataka and Maharashtra have had a bumper crop of tuvar (pigeon pea) this season, with excellent quality, large and shiny grains. However, some regions have experienced higher moisture levels, which are expected to correct in the coming days. From April to November, tuvar imports have doubled, which, along with the bumper production, has put pressure on prices.
As the most expensive pulse, tuvar has suffered from decreased consumption, especially after the import of lentils (matar) was allowed. In some regions, tuvar is even being mixed with lentils. Several dhabas in Uttar Pradesh are now using lentils instead of tuvar for dal tadka. After January 15, tuvar arrivals will peak, and by the end of February, Myanmar's tuvar will start arriving in India. By March-April, tuvar availability is expected to be good.
Myanmar farmers have seen high prices for tuvar in the last two seasons and may be hesitant to sell at lower prices. However, Myanmar is expected to have a bumper crop of 3.5 lakh tons of tuvar this year, which could force farmers to sell at lower prices.
Overall, with good production, increased imports, and lower demand from dal mills, tuvar availability will be ample, and prices in many markets are close to the MSP. The government will likely ensure that there is enough tuvar stock in the buffer, as it is the most expensive pulse, and price increases tend to attract media attention. Considering these factors, there is little chance of price hikes in tuvar at least until March-April.
